THX 1138 is a 1971 American social science fiction film co-written and directed by George Lucas in his directorial debut. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola and co-written by Walter Murch, the film stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence, with Don Pedro Colley, Maggie McOmie, and Ian Wolfe in supporting roles. The film is set in a dystopian future in which the citizens are controlled by android police and mandatory use of drugs that suppress emotions.

THX 1138 was developed from Lucas's 1967 student film Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, which he created while attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The feature film was produced in a joint venture between Warner Bros. and American Zoetrope. A novelization by Ben Bova was published in 1971.

Ce 41e projet de fans fut consacré au premier long réalisé par Georges Lucas et produit par Francis Ford Coppola : THX 1138. Film d'anticipation un peu trop difficile à aborder à l'époque, les studios Warner Bros jugèrent le long métrage inexploitable en l'état. Ils décidèrent donc d'en effectuer un complet remontage, qui fut tout autant un désastre au box office. C'est cette version remontée qui fut doublée telle quelle en français en 1971. Bien entendu, Georges Lucas, fidèle à ses travers, produisit bien des années plus tard une version entièrement remontée couplée à de nouveaux effets spéciaux numériques ainsi qu'un nouveau doublage pour sa sortie DVD. Le même procédé qui l'on conduit à remanier à plusieurs reprises sa célèbre saga Star Wars. Le montage d'origine fut donc "perdu". La réalisation de ce projet de fans fut délicate à aborder, et surtout extrêmement frustrante à réaliser. D'ordinaire, le projet des éditions de fans se borne à proposer un long métrage dans sa version d'origine mais surtout dans les meilleures conditions possibles. Hélas, il n'existe absolument aucune source vidéo de bonne qualité permettant d'atteindre ce critère essentiel de qualité. La plus récente édition vidéo, que ce soit DVD ou Blu-ray, est si profondément remaniée, avec des séquences recadrées, raccourcies voire rallongées, qu'il aurait été devenu un casse-tête bien trop difficile de recréer le film dans sa version d'origin. Aussi, ce 41e projet ne se contente que de faire le strict minimum. Sans cesse repoussé alors qu'il est terminé depuis plusieurs mois, c'est donc parce qu'aucune solution plus satisfaisante n'a été trouvée que ce projet est finalement dévoilé. THX 1138 est ici proposé dans son montage original, récupéré dans un vieux LaserDisc américain et couplé à la version française d'origine datant de 1971, où l'on retrouve notamment Marc Cassot, Philippe Dumat et Brigitte Morizan. De fait, cette édition de fans est dépourvue de tout menu, bonus ou même chapitrage. Par contre, le film retrouve ici sa complète intégrité, puisque son introduction originelle avec Buck Rogers ya été réintégrée (elle était absente du LaserDisc américain). La version définitive actuelle de ce projet a impliqué : un responsable authoring et un spécialiste audio. THX 1138 a ainsi pu être préservé en version française stéréo d'origine, version originale stéréo sous-titrée et dans son montage d'époque.Dans une société souterraine du xxve siècle, l'humanité vit sous sédatifs. Les habitants sont socialement soumis par un pouvoir totalitaire et invisible au sein d'un univers blanc monochrome. Sous l'impulsion de sa compagne, LUH 3417, l'ouvrier THX 1138 arrête son traitement chimique obligatoire et accepte de fuir avec elle. En conflit avec le chef de LUH 3417 - SEN 5241 - qu'il dénonce, THX 1138 se retrouve finalement en prison avec lui.THX 1138 est inculpé pour avoir enfreint la règle du sexe, interdit, avec LUH 3417 et pour n'avoir pas pris certaines des drogues obligatoires que LUH 3417 remplaçait pour le sortir de son état d'asserissement. THX 1138 et SEN 5241 s'enfuient de prison avec l'aide de l'hologramme à forme humaine SRT. Mais SEN 5241 renonce à quitter la cité après avoir été confronté à un passage à vide en explorant ses confins. THX 1138 y parvient après avoir découvert que LUH 3417 a été exécutée.
